The Dystopian World of Anthem

War. Death. Despair. Oppression. Environmental ruin. Dystopian novels have it all! Yet many of us love this genre, and there are good reasons we do. For one thing, we’re reading about rather than actually living through the bad stuff happening in the near or far future. We’re not in the arena, like the tributes of The Hunger Games, but we are watching them fight to survive (Astor). Dystopian literature has been around for many years, and it serves to warn us of what can happen in our future if we continue to live in certain ways. The Giver, The Maze Runner, Divergent, The Matrix, and The Hunger Games are just a few blockbuster films that present a dystopian world.

Describe the world of Anthem. What do you know about the government, the citizens, the rules/laws, the infractions for breaking a law? How does this world compare to the dystopian society you created? How would you feel if you lived in such a world?

  1. Anthem's society is very collectivist and anything that promotes individualism is not allowed. The citizens are forced to act as if they are equal and the government doesn't allow people to say personal pronouns other than "us" or "we" and they choose their occupation for them. If they step outside the lines they are punished. "Of all the children of that year, we were locked in the cellar most often" (Rand 20). Being locked in the cellar was the punishment when you were young. "We shall be sentenced to ten years in the Palace of Corrective Detention if it be discovered" (Rand 18). When they are older they are sent to their type of prison/jail. Anthem's dystopian world compares to mine because the government was corrupt and it controls things that the people should of controlled.

  2. Anthem is a Collectivism society that is very strict. We know that so far, the government consists of a council that makes all of the rules. The citizens are abiding people that are more trained to act like robots than humans because of the rules. Most of the rules force people to dehumanize themselves. For example, the main protagonist says, "We call them the Golden One. It is a sin to give men names to distinguish them from other men."(Rand 41) It is illegal to give someone a nickname even if it stays in your own head. I would never want to live in this kind of world. It is too cruel for for my taste.(As strange as that sounds)

  3. In the world of Anthem they live in a dystopian society; which mean that you can't have your own thoughts and you aren't allowed to live your life freely. The government in Anthem controls everything, laws, citizens, ect. Anthem has many different laws and rules, they mainly focus on the fact you are not allowed to think for your self, you are not allowed to think about yourself. When you are talking about yourself you can not say I,my, or me, instead you have to say we,us, and they. You are not allowed to talk in first person because you are only thinking about yourself which is not allowed. You are not allowed to talk about the unmentionable times either (our present day their past) Some laws are punishable by death others you will be put in a corrective detention for 10 years (jail). This is somewhat similar to the dystopian society I created because in my society one of the rules was you were not allowed to talk about other candidates, in this society you are not allowed to talk about the past. I would hate to live in a world where you can't think, act or speak freely. I like being original and creative in this world you are not allowed to to those things.I would hate to live in a world where you can't write or express your thoughts. In a world like Anthem their is no individuality and I would not be able to live with that.

  4. The world of Anthem seems like a really bad place to live in based on their conditions and how the government runs everything, and the way they run it. The government sets laws so people can see each other equally and treat each other equally. And nobody can love, because then they will like one person above another and thats forbidden. If you break the laws you will be punished. Death is a common punishment that will be used. The way this connects to my dystopian society is that you have to follow the law no matter what or there will be consequences. I would hate to live in an dystopian society. Its not right, and it shouldnt be ran like that. Everyone should be free and let them do what they want as long as its not bad. Still be laws to follow, just not like dystopian societies.

  5. In the world of Anthem your life is made for you. Everyone is equal, expression is wrong, no family, no personal belongings, no love, no friends, and no preferences. If they break the law they get marked for death. If i lived in such a world i would not like it and i would rebel although there is consequences when you do such i wouldn't be able to live in such a society, i enjoy my freedom and i enjoy being able to change the way i do things instead of a set schedule every single day i don't think anyone would like that.

  6. Anthem is somewhere that I know a lot of people would not like to be because they are repeating and there is young children that they may not know what they are doing because that place that they are at is 5-15 so that will not be a place I will not want to be.

  7. The government is very cruel and strict of how the people live in the society. The citizens are not treated well and they don't have family's."We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE,One,indivisible and forever."I would hate to live in this world and its just like the one i created.

  9. The world of anthem is horrible the government choose your jobs for you. The citizen have no choice they have people decide for them on what there suppose to do and the rules are crazy. First of all they shall not speak in first person if they talk they have to say we,our, etc and in the first chapter in the begin it says that it a sin to write though no other are allow to see. They can't choice on what they won't to be.The infraction for breaking the law is reporting to the council and seeing them get lashed to death in front of everyone. This world is compared to the society of my dystopia because they are restricted to go in to places they are not allowed in and if they do they would be punished.if i live in such a world i wouldn't survive because you can like someone more than others and they decide what job you get and your live. I would never let anyone choice who i should be because its my live not their i was born to do great thing not boring things.

  10. The government in anthem is a collectivism society which means that the group is more important than yourself. The citizens must all be alike and are forbidden to be different because the government believes it is a sin. Men are to say " we are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE one, indivisible and forever"(Rand 19) when they are tempted to do wrong. The citizens are sentenced to three years in the palace of corrective detention when a transgression is made. The government makes it's citizens believe everyone is the same not greater nor less and if you are different it is considered a sin. This compares to my dystopian society by how everyone is treated equally and the same. Also how it is ruled by a government and believes in collectivism and individualism. If i were to live in such of a society i would not indulge the type of life style i would get assigned because i'd rather have the choice to chose on what i would like to do with my life. -Nayeli n

  11. The world of anthem is a place were there is no such thing as individualism everyone must care for each other which means collectivism. The government picks random jobs for you to do even if you don't want to work in it you have no other choice. The citizens are all equal there is no such thing as different. If one person is different than the other they may start to complain to them.An example from the book,"There is evil in your bones"(ROM 18).Some rules are that "It is a sin to write, you can not become friends with anybody,There is no such thing as love".If you brake a law you may get sent to jail or death. It compares to mine because it has rules and it is created by me.I would feel so mad and i will show my anger even tho i go to jail im going to be different than the others and change it.

  13. The world of Anthem is a sad, lonely, and oppressive one with no new discoveries or knowledge. It is not the same mine was no one really knew anyone else and were completely under the government's control. I would do the same as equality but I would study the weapons and defense side of technology to defend myself, and everything else to bring others to my side such as power, ovens, better ways to keep you healthy and other technology that people may want.

  14. In the world Anthem there is no such thing as individualism. You are not aloud to think for yourself or do anything for yourself. You are not aloud to pick your own jobs, the government picks for you. Everyone is equal. When someone is born, they are given a name. their name is a noun with a number. "Equality 7-2521." Equality 7-2521 is different from everyone else. When you read the book he keeps saying "we" but what he really means is "I". I would not like living in a world like anthem because I like thinking for myself and I like having friends and my own possessions. If i lived in Anthem I wouldn't have any of that.

  15. In the world of "Anthem" by Ayn Rand, humanity now lives in a extremely communist society where people live for the good of society only, and not for themselves. Everyone in this society must be equal and the same. It is prohibited to be smarter, taller, think differently, smile without reason, laugh without a reason, question something, speak to someone with another job, think of women, draw, write, and even think differently from everyone else. "...it was that the learning was too easy. This is a great sin...". (Rand 21) "'There is evil in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the body of your brother'". (Rand 18)

  16. The world Anthem is a place with nothing or no one can that think for him/her self they have to use we,our, they and other pronouns for other humans. they cant think or even ask questions or do anything that requires them to do stuff."There is evil in your bones"(Rom 18) meaning that there is no other human who can be smarter or be better then every one else. The thing about Equality 7-2521 is hes to tall and he is smarter then everyone else but that is a crime because of they have to be equal and none is more smarter or more better then anyone.

  17. The word anthem is a place where individualism doesn't exist, everyone has to be the same and equal and care for each other equally which is collectivism. What I know about the citizens and the laws etc. Is that everyone has to not be alone at all times, and you are assigned a job at 15 and you are not allowed to pick a job. Also the laws if you break them most of the time are punishable by death. This world compares very well with my world because it is basically boring and everything is the same. Also you aren't allowed to do a lot of things that would be just you as an individual you must do everything together. I would hate living in this boring world with horrible punishments, but if I was actually in the world and I was one of the characters it wouldn't really matter because to me everything would be normal, because they don't know about the "unmentionable times".

  18. The world of anthem is were if your are smart you get placed in the job that you don't want it is a really crazy world were there is no such thing as individualism and everyone is the same and nobody is different. If you tell them that you want to work in a certain job they will not give it to you life is so unfair there"Equality 7-2521,were not happy in those years in the home of the students"(Rom 21).there it shows how bad they were treated and what it was"There is evil in your bones"(Rom 18).This is what I think about the anthem.

  19. The world of Anthem is a world in which the world has gone completely downhill and everything is run by a very small group of people. It is a world were no one can do what they want, like who they like, or choose what they want to do with their lives. The one rule that the 'government' has is that everyone will be equal no matter what. If someone deviates from the law they will be punished severely. Anthem differs from the world I created for quite a few different reasons. The world I created was able to have a small connection to what is happening in the real world. My world was infested with technology and social media. Anthem is a world that were no one could control what they do. It is also a world where no one could choose what they would like to do with their lives. I would probably try to become a rebel just like Equality. I would hate to be bossed around and told what I could and could not do or told that I can't like anyone more than others.

  20. in this dystopian society anthem by Ayn Rand is a society where everything is collectivism which means that individualism is illegal and you cannot be different but the main character in this book equality 7-2521 is bigger than everyone else which makes him different than everybody "There is evil in your bones for your body has grown beyond the bodys of your brothers" (Rand 18). My dystopian society isn't much different than anthems you kinda only know what everyone else knows unless you become a scholar than you learn more than the average joe but everything else is the same along with the punishments.

  21. The world of anthem is a place were keeping people in line and in order is top priority and try to control the public. Often times you can hear people saying" we are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE one, indivisible and forever" (rand 19,ex...) and shows a way that this world controls people. If your different they try to correct you or yell at you they make everyone learn at the same pace and love i completely forbidden from this society. It is impossible for someone to be different without someone noticing and committing crimes have huge punishment and the rules are very unclear as anything that isn't a law is a crime. The story of anthem is a very messed up collectivism society and could happen.

  22. The setting of this story is terrible. People are forced to do things weather they enjoy them are not. People can't have any self possessions or thoughts or ideas. The citizens have to wear the same clothes and take the same classes and graduate at the same age. If you think though, they are creating a worse society because it's like teens, if you give them no freedom what so ever they are more likely to sneak out and do bad things but if you give them freedom, not too much but just enough the are less likely to lie to you and do bad things. That kind of what all these laws are going to add up to. My dystopian story is pretty evil but it's still not as bad as the Anthem setting. I would hate to live in a world like anthem because i think i would die living in a world where I couldn't dance or cheer or play basketball.

  23. The government controls what all people do. No one can be different, and everyone had to be the same. No one can think for themselves and everyone is the same height, hair color, clothing, attire, and habits. Many people are given the jobs, and if you think you want a job, you get the job as the Street Sweeper or a worse job where you do nothing. I would despise to live in a world like that, but I can manage everything, except for my job, depending on what I get. If there was a chance to rebel I would jump in and try to over throw the government. Equality 7-2521 is taller than the other people he is 6 ft tall, and everyone else is 5 ft tall. " There is evil in Your bones" (Rand 18). They told him that he sinned for being tall and different so they punished him for that. He can't decide if he is going to be tall or not, it's just the way he was born. This is an example for me for why I wouldn't want to live there because they punish you for something you can't control. Anthem is a place where all men and women are the same. They all think alike, they have no families, they can't be individual and they can't think for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  24. In the world of Anthem, you do not get to pick what you want to do in life and your life is controlled by the government. Everyone has to be the same and you would not have a family, any friends, or anything because you have to be the exact same as everyone else. If I lived in a place like this and I didn't get the job I wanted, I would probably Equality and do whatever I want because it just isn't fair to have your life controlled by other people. Everyone also has to follow the laws and if you don't, the government will probably punish you pretty bad. Also, they told Equality that there is "Evil in you bones" (Rand 18) just because he was tall.

  26. The world that Anthem is placed in has a corrupt government that none dares want for the future. The government wishes everyone to be incredibly similar if not all the same, for it is a sin to be different. "We are one in all and all in one. There are No men but only the great WE, One indivisible and forever" (Rand 19). The world of Anthem is a horrible one, much worse then one that ever could have created. In mine, it was controlled by animals yes, but it had less harsh punishments in comparison. I would hate living in a world such as the one in the book, there is no joy, laughter or love. You are stripped of most of your thoughts and feelings and forced to work for "A greater good"

  27. the world of anthem created by Ayn Rand is a perfect example of the opposite definition of a perfect world. People in this world cannot do almost anything by oneself. They can't think, for themselves, everything they do is for the community. everyone is equal so no one can be smarter, stronger, bigger or higher than the others. In this dystopian world, those are in the law which was made up by the Council. About the job, individuals can not choose their favorite jobs, those were also chosen by the council. To be honest, Ayn Rand's world is more extreme and dreadful than my dytopian world. Her world had more unfortunate situations and problems to the citizen than mine.

  28. Anthem is a collectivist society where thought and emotion is condemned. In Anthem there is no individualism and everyone must be "equal", no one is higher than another."There is evil in your bones."(Rand 18)The government says that to Equality 7-2521 as he is taller than most and they want him to be the same height as most others. As a citizen in Anthem, the government picks your career once you finish school and reach the age 15. Once your job is picked, there is no changing what you do and must live with it your whole life. If a crime/sin is committed, the punishments are to be sentenced to death. The government in Anthem does this so people will not complain and want to be like others and go berserk. Anthem compares to my dystopian setting because in Anthem there are no thoughts or emotion, same as mine. If I were to live in Anthem, I would hate it because I would not like the fact of not being able to have emotion or thought and no communication with others; I would feel as if I had no freedom or rights.

  29. The world of Anthem is a place where there is no such thing as individualism everyone must care for each other which is collectivism. The government gets to choose what jobs you have and who you mate with, you have no choice. The people are all equal there is no such thing as different. like an example It is a sin to write your own thoughts, or you cannot love someone more.If you do attend to break the laws and they catch you, they might sentence you to death for being different. This compares to my story, because my government is controlled by computers and four different leaders. The rule of my story was kinda similar to this because you cant choose who you want to marry, different race aren't allowed to communicate or fall i love, nor be friends.

  30. The book anthem is placed in a future world where individualism doesn't exist. The government picks your job regardless if you wanted or not. Every one is "equal"...but Equality 7-2521 is taller and smarter than others, the council is displeased with him because he is not being equal with the others,"There is evil in your bones"(Rand 18). The rules in a gist are "don't be different in anyway." It isn't like my society because it is about mutants fighting their way through a post-apocalyptic world that's full of enemies. The radioactive waste allows mutants to improve their abilities by mutating new limbs on the fly. The abundant availability of powerful weaponry makes the quest to become ruler of the Wasteland by sitting on the Nuclear Throne,The Inter Dimensional Police Department (I.D.P.D) will prevent the mutants from trying to reach the throne by shooting them upon sight. The I.D.P.D use their totalitarianism to make sure the mutants know not to resist, but the mutants ignore the warnings and still try to become the king/queen of the wasteland. Even if it means death, the mutants will try to get to give the I.D.P.D a taste of what the mutants have to live through every day. If I lived in anthem and I wasn't allowed to be different,I would most likely try to get killed, but if I lived in my made up dystopian society than, I think would survive, because The only three rules of the I.D.P.D are;Don't resist,Don't try to reach the throne, and know you will die...So I would still be able to be different as long as I hid from the I.D.P.D officers with other mutants.

  31. The world of anthem is a dystopian world that your not allowed to think for yourself and you have to talk as if you where in a group ex:we went to the bathroom. it would be I went to the bathroom. in that dystopian world the council picks your job you don´t get to choose what you want to be. you also cant be different from others. the laws are if you think for yourself you get detention. you don´t get a name you get a number that people call you by.they cant speak of the time before them.I think my world is more fair then the one they have if i lived in there world i wouldn't even last a week.the old people don´t work and when they turn 45 they are called the ancient ones.the kids are kept in the home of the infants until there 5 year old then they start learning .by 15 they start working on there assigned job.

  32. The world in anthem is a collectivist society where groups are more important than individuals. Everyone is equal and no one owns anything. Citizens are given their jobs after you finish at age 15. The job you get is the job you do for the rest of your life and you can't change it either. If you don't follow the laws you will be punished by death. Anthem compares to my society by not having any relationships either being family, friend, or romantic. I would hate living in the world that anthem takes place because you don't get to enjoy the little things in life.

  33. In the world of Anthem there is no "I" or "me" any more, just "us" and "we" now. it is this way because it is a collectivist society and no one person can be alone. all of the laws, or Transgressions, in this society prevent anyone from being very different from the others in the society. some of the transgressions of the society is to essentially prevent all thoughts of preference, this means that you couldn't ask for or want one thing more than another, such as a job. this would make sure that no one person would get what they want but everyone else doesn't. they also don't approve of creative thinking, such as writing or drawing. I don't think I would be able to last very long in a society like that, I'd probably go insane. My distopian world sounds a bit less threatening for the mind, but the one I made essentially starts to remove humans and turn them into a computer that is controlled by one large super computer. Anthem sounds like a completely unfair world that I would probably try to escape from if I was trapped in it, it sounds like a terrible place to be.

  34. Anthem is a world of collectivism. Where people are not aloud to think, talk, or act for themselves in any way what so ever. This is because the government controls the society. By doing so they made the rules such as no preferences, no emotions, no doing what you love, because they were a government based off of fear. There fear was having everyone be different and bringing new ideas into life. As for the citizens they were all the same because the government had made them this way. Everyone was equal. On page 21 it says," We are nothing, Mankind is all"(Rand). This shows that they doesn't believe in oneself but in society of same likes and differences. The society in this book goes along with my dystopian society because all the people dont have a mind of their own. Everyone is raised by a government or leader. If I was raised in a society like this I would feel very unsafe and violated because I would have someone telling what I need to like, who to love, what to be and those are quality's oneself should always have and cherish for themselves.

  35. Anthem is a society where the people cant have connections and cant be what they want to be. They also cant learn things they want to they have to learn the things the government will allow them to. Even there jobs are given to them they cant pursue their interests. I would hate living in this society I would feel constrained and normal, dont want to be normal at all. This society is very similar to the one I created everyone has to listen to the government. I would also not like the fact that we couldn't have a life with a family hate that idea.

  36. In the world of Anthem, the government wanted everyone to act and think exactly the same. If rules were broken they would have to go to jail for years. One may not like one person more than the other, they all have to be equal but Equality 7-2521 has already broken that rule. "This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression, the great Transgression of Preference, to love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men and all men are our friends."(Rand 30) This dystopian world related to my world because the government controls how you act. I would strongly dislike living in Anthem because of its type of community. I am always curious and I would rather be myself and think for myself other than having to be told what to do with my life. I would rather choose my own future and be happy with it.

  37. In anthem the only thing that matters is the great group. You do everything as and for a group. The government is a "council"(Rand 18). The citizens are the same in what they do. The punishment for an infraction is years in the"palace of corrective detention"(Rand 18). This world is like the one I created in the fact the punishments are harsh. I would feel bared for doing what I want to. Also I feel like things should have been better and the leaders made many mistakes. I feel like people should push for change. The people would get bored very quickly in such a society.

  39. Anthem is a dystopian society about collectivism and equality. You can't have a friend because that means you love him more than other men. " To love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men"( Rand 30). If you break a law, you get thrown to a place for detention to reflect what you have done. You can't have fun or smile because that means that you are different than the rest and that's not good. " It is not proper to smile without reason"( Rand 29) The dystopian we created is ruled by a dictator and Anthem is ruled by the council. If I lived in a place like that, I would revolt because it would be so boring and not be able to have fun

  40. The world of Anthem is a society in which collectivism their form of government. Anything that remotely relates to individualism is strictly forbidden. You're not allowed to be better than anyone, be curious, stand out in any way, keep anything to yourself, or have your own thoughts. You're also not allowed to have preferences towards people or careers or be alone. If someone is caught committing a "sin" (Rand) or "transgression" (Rand), you are sent to the "Palace of Corrective Detention" (Rand 18). The dystopian society I created and the dystopian society in Anthem are quite similar. The only differences is that mine is ruled by a single dictator, and punishments for crimes are more severe and vary depending on the crime you commit. If I lived in a world like Anthem, I would feel very alone and kind of trapped due to lack of individuality and allowance of creativity.

Anthem is place where no one is different or better than the other, where everyone has a position to fill and will fill it to fit in with the rest of the society and the rest of their brothers. No one shall be treated different and no one shall do their own thing and shall be any different or be better at anything than anyone else. That way there is no conflict, but if anyone were to go against this they will sentenced jail time and be punished, because normal is okay and different is frowned upon.

  44. in anthem everyone is equal and no one is allowed do what they want in any way shape or form. the government is called a "council"(Rand 18) and is kind of like communism where the government owns everything and everyone. the infractions for breaking laws like having friends or emotions "it is a sin to write this" (rand 26) you would be thrown into the "palace of corrective detention"(Rand 18) It does kind of relate to my world where everyone is the same and there is lots of working. if i lived in this world I would be really bored and probably not happy.

  45. Anthem is a very collectivism and equality. They can never be alone. If they don't follow rules they get thrown into the place of detention. There government is very strict. This is kind of like my world except mine can feel and or think by themselves. My government was unknown. They were allowed to have kids and be a family. I would not want to live in a world like this I like being my own person and I want to have a job that I want and I am good at.

  46. In the world of Anthem you must follow all the rules or else you get sent to the place of detention. You are not allowed to own anything or to have relationships with anyone like friends or family. You are not allowed to have thoughts and everyone is assigned a job and must follow their schedule every day. In my society I created you were at least able to have friends and family but not until you were 18 years old and you were only allowed one child for the rest of your life. I would not like to live in society where I am not allowed to own things or to have a family.

  47. I don't know much about the government, but I know they are unfair. They decide your job and the rest of your life mostly. If you "sin" then you get a job you don't like in order to repent and give back. But in comparision to my society I made a dictator who makes and enforces all rules. My society can be viewed as more harsh in some aspects but in Anthem they can't even love or favor others! Equality 7-2521 made some friends and they said, " Rather would we die."
(Rand 34) This shows that he dosn't care any more and just wants to learn. He is willing to die than to just turn in information about a tunnel.

  48. Anthem is a society of collectivism. Its a place where everyone must be equal. You´re always considered as a group and never as an indivisual. The citizen arent given much choices or freedom for their own life. The arent even allowed to make friends because that would be a sin. If i lived in a society like that i would absolutely hate it. I like to explore, smile, and have freedom and if wouldnt be able to do any of that then what would be the point of living.

  49. The society in Anthem is very collectivist and basically has these rules that make no sense. The government controls every single thing like, who you can be around with, how long you live, what you can think and know.In this society you must follow each and everyone of their rules no matter what."Thus must all men live until they are forty"is a rule that all men must follow(Rand 28).This world compares to the one I created because my world also has a specific annoying set of rules that everyone must follow or be punished. In my world also like in Anthem everyone's actions are limited and don't always get to do or say what they want.I would probably feel sad and really annoyed with all the pointless rules I would have to follow.

  50. Anthem is a place of equality and collectivism. None of the citizens have their own name everybody name is equality. They also have a lot of rules where pretty much everything is crime and you can't be alone. You do everything together as a group and the government is council. It kinda compares to my society in some ways but my government is run by dictatorship but everything is equal. Also my society has a purge every year and you are limited to one kid where Anthem you have no family you are raised in home with other kids your age. I feel like i wouldn't be able to make out there in that world because there are too many rules.

    1. They all have a noun for a name - followed by a #, but they are not all named equality.

  51. Anthem is a very controlled society that strives for perfection but in the end it is the opposite. The rules are to be followed and if they are broken punishment will follow. Equality 7-2521 has already broken two major rules. ¨This is an evil thing to say, for it is a transgression of preference, to love any among men better than others, since we must love all men and all men are our friends.¨ [30] This dystopian society focuses greatly on each person is one, they barely have an identity, they are just another part of the group. Having such strict rules and not being able to have opinions or even a identity is not the preferable living situation.

  53. In Anthem everyone in the group works together. Their from of government is a council. Everyone is supposed to be the same. For doing the wrong thing the punishment is "The palace of corrective detention" (Rand 18).It is also wrong to like someone more then another person "We must love all men and all men are our friends" (Rand 30). The world I made is not that different but it has some differences in the way that we have a little more freedom. The punishments are more harsh, but you are allowed to think freely. In a society like this people would eventually rebel and try to change the rules.

  54. The world of Anthem is very boring and sad. Everyone there is forced to live in society of collectivism. There, people are not allowed to think for themselves, be alone, do something other than they're supposed to, or be happy for no reason, "it is not proper to smile without reason"(Rand 29).The people all do what they are told everyday and live the same things everyday. The government takes people who break laws and they lash them and kill them, "will you report us to the Council and see us lashed to death before your eyes?" (34). All of these things relate to my Dystopian society because there, people aren't allowed to do much of anything besides what they were assigned, and if they disobey, they are killed. Much like in the society of Anthem. If I had to live in this society, I would hate everything. I love being individual and having my own opinions. If that was taken away from me, I would probably die.

  55. In Anthem everyone in one group. Their citizens are all equal and they cant have something better then someone else so everyone is suppose to be the same. There punishment is "The palace of corrective detention"(rand 18). That our world was sorta close to this but not as controlling a more freedom. If I lived in there world i wouldn't like it so much and probably fight for my freedom.

  56. In Anthem the is society where everybody is considered equal. No one is allowed to have their own opinions on anything, "We are nothing, mankind is all"(Rand 21). When a baby is born, they get assigned a name and taken to a children's home. There are no families. Jobs are assigned to you as well. The government is known as "council"(Rand 18). Punishments for certain wrong-doings there is a corrective detention. In the society you aren't allowed to prefer one thing over another"Transgression of Preference"(Rand 30). You can't want something more than something else, you can't like someone more than someone else or think anything/anyone/yourself is better than another. You aren't allowed to write or draw unless it coordinates with our assigned job. The society is similar to the one I created, but I felt my society was a little harsher and more extreme rather than the one in Anthem. I don't think I would feel happy or enjoy it, but I would live like any other person there because it would be "normal" and that would be just how life was even if I didn't like it.

  57. In the world of Anthem your own life is truly made for you. Everyone is equal and you cant smile with no reason. If they break the law they get marked for death. If I did live in such a world I would not like it and I would rebel although there is problems when you do such things. I wouldn't be able to live in such a society cause I love freedom and where you can do whatever you like and have personal belongings and whenever age you could die.

  58. In the sociality of Anthem they are very striked and very collectivism. The government wants evryone to be equal to one an other. When you break a law you you will be taken to jail and will be sentenced. The government does want the people of Anthem to go explore, ask questions, or have any kind of relationship. The dystopian world i have created is some what alike to Anthem, THey have pretty set on rules and laws that people have to follow on a daily bases. In the world i have created was an awful place to live for the rest of your life. Int he world of Anthem they always have to be collectivism, the government doesnt want them to be individual and help the whole city. If I had to live in a dystopian world i'll feel trapped and wouldnt be able to express myself the way i do today.I wouldnt be the things i want to be when i grow up, people would have to choose my future, I wouldnt be different from other people we will all be equal and have to be normal.

  59. In the world of Anthem its very depressing place. Where everyone has to be equal. The government controls the society they are not aloud to think for themselves. An example would be "men may not write unless the council of vocations bib them so." If you break a law you well get killed. This society compares to my dystopian society because they cant wear anything different and you are not allowed to love someone more or less that's some things we have in common. I honestly would not like living there because they have all these rules that I know I probably wouldn't fallow because I enjoy being different and doing things my way and I certainly don't like people bossing me around.

  60. Anthem is a place where everyone is equal no one can be different. No one chooses there own job someone chooses for them they don't have a family. no one can travel to places or explore. Exploring is illegal

  61. The world of anthem is very depressing, and sad,and the gov't has too much rules for such a society. Some of the denizens are happy not too much are happy though. Most of the laws are really outrageous with the "not allowed to smile without reason". This world doesn't compare to the society I created. I would feel miserable because I'm working everyday until the day I die. Most of the people are jaded and sad, a sad life is a life I wouldn't want to live

  62. The society of Anthem is an unusual place were everyone thinks the same. The government isn't called "the government" it's called a "council" (Rand 18). The council (government) owns everyone and chooses for them as what they do for living. The citizens in Anthem are not allowed to have friends "to love any among men better than the others, since we must love all men are our friends" (30). When a citizen reaches age forty they are sent to the Homes of the Useless ,but when a citizen reaches the age of forty-five it is a miracle they are called "the Ancient Ones" (28). If you are friends with someone it's an evil thing to say if you are friends with someone "for it is a transgression, the great Transgression of Preference" (30). If you have found something rare it is immediately reported to the council and you might get rewarded. This dystopian society is different to the one I created my dystopian society is all in use for technology and for the Anthem society it's not it's more as a modern society and my dystopian society is with the new things (technology). I would feel like I'm nothing. I would feel faded and isolated.

  63. The world in Anthem is a collectivism society you work with a group there is no I .Also the government are completely under control and they pick your job even if you hate it.For example Equality 7-2521 wanted to be a scholar but instead he became a street sweeper. The citizens are all equal and everybody are about the same. Also the rules/laws are outrageous you cant even have a opinion on someone or on something you cant love some one,you cant have best friends, you cant write a book and even more. The infractions for breaking a law are sentenced to three years in the palace of corrective detention or even death. My dystopian is similar like a collectivism society also they work a lot and get killed for not following the rules.I would hate this world I with like to have freedom and my own opinion and thought.

  65. In Anthem, the government is a council that controls everything you do. The people who live in Anthem are one and they’re not allowed to use pronouns such as, “I”,”me”,”my”. They are also not allowed to be alone, have friends, or have families. Until they are five they live in the home of infants, from when they turn five until they’re fifteen, they live in another home all together, when they turn fifteen the council will assign them jobs, and it’s against the rules for hope for a different job. “We wished to be sent to the Home of Scholars” (Rand 23). The dystopian society I created and this one are very similar they both don’t let the people have any freedoms, and are very controlling over people. If i lived in a world like this I would probably try to fight for my freedom and independance.

  66. The novella Anthem portrays a dystopian society. It is a collectivist society ruled by a council rather than a "government".The citizens are supposedly free but they aren't allowed to do several things, for example they can't even grow too much, "There is evil in your bones"(Rand 18). The novella stated this when the main character Equality 7-2521 said that he was taller than most people. Whenever they do wrong, they are punished with prison up to the punishment of death. Also when they do wrong it is not called breaking the law, however it is a transgression or sin. The society in Anthem differs with the society that I created because I say that there is only one ruler and any offence to the law is punishable by only death. I feel like I would hate to live in either society because I like the freedom we have in the world right now and In like making my own decisions.
