  3. The type of figurative language is personification because it has human features for example when he says "fear walked through the city". To show the impact it has on the society they are living in. The government is causing this fear because they have limits to what they can do and what they cant do. If they do get caught doing something they aren't supposed to they can get punished by death. That quote means that if you have fear then your greatest goal is not done to the fullest because of that fear.

  4. The author of "Anthem" uses personification in this passage, giving fear human qualities that is does not possess. She does this to explain to the reader that it has such a large presence in their society, saying it is "Hanging in the air" and that it "Walks through the city." The thing causing the fear in their society is suppression and not having the ability to find what life is worth to you. This can cause depression and the will to live to die. The quote means that conquering your fear can be "your greatest growth." This applies to Anthem in the ways that if the people conquered their fears, as in acting out against the collectivist society, they could achieve happiness.

  5. personification is being used in this quote from anthem. The author give fear human qualities because he won't the readers to understand that everyone in anthem are scared of something. Equality's brothers are in fear from whatever happened in the flames of saint and how they can't figure out the unspeakable word. This quote mean you can have a really big fear but you grow out of it and it relates to anthem because it talk's about fear.

  6. In this quote from Anthem the author uses personification. The reason the author gives fear human qualities is so that the readers can understand more about what Equality 7-2521 is feeling, "all men can feel it, none dare to speak." In addition to this the reason Equality's brothers are feeling it as well is because it is throughout the city, everyone can feel it, they just don't understand what it is they are feeling. "Your largest fear carries your greatest growth" means to me that in order to achieve something big you have to get past the obsticles in the way, if it doesn't challenge you it doesn't change you.

  7. The quote uses personification to show that there is fear across the whole society in Anthem. Ayn Rand gives fear human qualities to emphasize how fear is spreading across the society. Fear is going through Equality's brothers because they saw him with Liberty 5-3000. It is either that or it is because of the whole that they found in chapter one. They are scared because both of those things are big "sins" or "transgressions" that are punishable by prison or death. I'd say that the quote above means that if you overcome your fears, that would be your greatest accomplishment. I say it ties into anthem because Equality 7-2521 is overcoming his fears of society by falling in love with Liberty 5-3000 and being in the hole and writing. I feel like later on he will make others face their fear of society.

  8. "There is fear hanging in the air of the sleeping halls, and in the air of the streets. Fear walks through the City, fear without name, without shape. All men feel it and none dare to speak" Personification is the figurative language being used in the quote. The author gives 'fear' human qualities because it is what the people feel. The council is always watching them which causes them a great deal of fear, also by them thinking they're going to go against one another. The quote means like when you accomplish your fears you'll feel good about yourself, within yourself you know you accomplished something and that's growth. They have fears of failing their classes.

  10. In this quote, they give fear human characteristics, so its figurative language is personification. They give the word human qualities because how people are every where and there's always something or someone, also fear will be there no matter what. I think they are afraid because of how they are living, the society is messed up.It probably means that if you have a fear, and get through it, you mature and know how to get around things more easily. Like how equality thinks differently now and learning more stuff now that hes doesn't feel that scared. He has matured in the way he thinks.

  11. In the quote the figurative language is personification because he is being fear human qualities. The author gives fear human qualities because the author wants you to feel how fear could be anywhere and to also it could also be the author trying to say that everyone has fear they might not know what it is but there has been instances that where the author presents the idea of fear. "There are Fraternity 2-5503, a quiet boy with wise, kind eyes, who cry suddenly, without reason, in the midst of day or night, and their body shakes with sobs they cannot explain" (Rand 47). I think that the author wanted us to think about fear in this chapter, the author wanted us to know that plays a big part in this society. The fear in equality's brothers are feeling alone and possibly trapped in the next sentence we find out that one of his brothers in the night screams "Help Me" and no one knows why. it could possibly be the mind speaking for itself. maybe he feel's this way but just hold it in (like most people in this).

  12. The type of figurative language being used in the quote above is personification because it describing a word and it is giving it human qualities. The author gives the word fear human qualities because it describing how it hunts all men and lingers through them. The cause of fear that gives equality's brothers is that the government made them believe that if you are different from of your brothers it is a transgression and it is wrong.

  13. Fear is hanging, and walking. This is personification because This is giving a nonhuman object human actions like walking and hanging. Fear can not literally hang or walk. It is used to show where people feel this emotion in this example. The fear that people in this society is caused by people thinking that they are going to go against their brothers. If they do that, they would be punished. Fear makes you want to do something to make it go away. It is why people work so hard before large tests. They have a fear of failing the class and needing to retake it. Fear compels people to do things. This relates to anthem because there is a fear of breaking the rules and doing a disservice to the other people in Anthem society. It keeps people from doing bad things. Fear.

  17. personification is being used in this quote, The author give fear human qualities because he wants the readers to understand that everyone in anthem are feeling fear and he want them to connect to the quote in their own way. The reason why equality brothers feel fear id because they don't feel safe."Your largest fear carries your greatest growth" means that if you get over your fears to succeed it will make success great.

  18. In the quote above the figurative language that is being used is personification. Fear is given human qualities because everyone has fear running through their bodies. That quote connects to Anthem because most the time when you are scared of something, that pushes you to want to overcome your fear. The fear of Equalities brother is that if one small little thing makes you different from everybody else then you are committing a crime and that is wrong. So they have the fear that they are committing a crime that they don't know about.

  19. The figurative language that is being used in the quote is personification because it is probably giving human qualities to something the author ants you to feel fear.fear is going through the brothers because I think they saw him with liberty 5-300."the boy shakes with sobs they cannot explain"(Rand 47).I think the quote means that you have to go through fear because life is going to have some hard thing you have to go through so in anthem the brother have to go through fear to get growth.

  20. Personification is being used in the quote. The author gives fear human qualities to make it more relatable, because when fear hangs around It is being implied that it is unexpected and people are paranoid on what happens next. Your largest fear carries your biggest growth either means that fear is like a tumor, the bigger the fear is..the bigger the "growth" is,and it only goes away when one conquers the fear... Or it can mean that with fears come large success. It relates to Anthem because Equality needs to get over his fear of disregarding the rules of the society.

  21. Personification is used in the quote above. Fear is given human qualities to help show better context and make it more relatable to the reader. Fear in Equality's brothers is there because they are made to think they are different from others "yet our brothers are not like us"(Rand 47). Fear is what holds back many people and Equality fears of all the trouble he'll get in if he gets caught committing all these transgressions, for example he's trying to get Liberty to himself and not let her go to the mating house and you're required to go to the house by the government.

  22. Rand is using personification to describe fear. I think she is giving fear human characteristics because fear can take over. Fear can keep you from doing something that one day you might end up loving, it can keep you from many greatnesses. I think the whole having to be the same thing is causing the craziness, "all men can feel it, none dare speak it" they know who they are, each and every one of them are different in so many ways and they know it. But yet the are forced to "be" the same but i, sure even the government knows its all an act. Just think, " Your largest fear carries your greatest youth". If your fears are holding you back you will never be able to pass this generation of your life, one day, eventually, there will come a day you must face your fears.

  23. This quote is based around fear. The word fear is given personification as it is said "Fear walks through the City, fear without name, without shape." Fear can't literally walk but this is said to symbolize that this fear is unknown and everywhere. The reason of this fear, is mostly the fear of not doing what you are supposed to. In this dystopian society, not obeying the rules could get you tortured or dead, just like Equality when he denied to admit where he had been, or the man at the town center who once spoke the forbidden word and got burn ed alive. Men want to speak up, but none of them dare. The quote " your largest fear carries your greatest growth" tries to tell us that if we are able to surpass our biggest fears, we could become stronger. Like in Anthem, if they are able to stop being afraid and speak up against the authoritarian government, they could use their full potential.

  24. The quote that was graciously provided for us is an example of personification. Air can´t really hang or walk. The author gives fear human qualities to give more tone to the story. Without tone the story would be boring and may not even make sense. The thing that causes the fear is the thought of being overwhelmed by the government. The people know that they can´t do anything against the government without them knowing or punishment. In the story,¨Anthem¨ by Ayn Rand, Equality´s fears are what motivate him to continue going and discovering new things. Because of his curiosity, he is cable of changing the world around him. The second quote connects to the story by doing the same thing that Equality does. Both the quote and Equality let their fears motivate them to push forward and advance in life.

  25. In the above quote personification is being used because it is giving fear human qualities. The reason that the author gave fear human qualities because it makes it more in depth and scary because if you said they just they were afraid vs. saying fear hangs in the air and all that stuff it makes it more creepy. The government because the government is always watching and if you break the rules/law there are severe punishments. The quote means that when you are afraid of doing something it holds back progression, intelligence, etc. it basically prevents you from being able to progress in what you are trying to do whether it be overcoming something that is an external conflict or internal conflict and it goes on.

  26. The quote is using figurative language and it shows the reader fear is like a real person to other people. The author gives "fear" human qualities to symbolize that people know fear is there, they just don't know when to expect it or what it will do to them. Fear has the qualities to show that, the actions people do, there is always fear with them to show that they can't escape it until the are not afraid. The fear in Equality's brothers is that he is different. He is much bigger than them, and they are afraid that he might hurt them or cause harm to their society. His brothers are all the same, they know that he is not like them, and they fear that the same thing might happen to them. The quote "Your largest fear carries your greatest growth" means that every time you overcome a fear, you get hope and pursue more knowledge and strive to overcome all your fears as you move on. If you come across more fears you just overcome them and move on with life.

  27. The type of figurative language being used in this quote is personification. The author gives fear human qualities to explain that even if they live in this society, all of the people still have fears. He just wants to explain to the reader that these people are forced to be the same, but they do still have different fears. Fear is going through Equality's brothers because they saw him with Liberty. The quote "Your largest fear carried your greatest growth" means that once you get past your fears, you might become super good at something or be successful. I feel like this related to Anthem because if they all get past their fear, maybe one day the society will become happy. Also, in the story the author says,"fear walks through the city" meaning everyone has fears(Rand 46).

  28. Ayn Rand the author of Anthem uses similes and metaphors "like black pleats that sparkle with thin, green spangles" (Rand 38). Rand gives fear human qualities because fear is not common in the society equality lives in. fear makes people complete things like if your scared you'll have to redo a paper you do good the first time so you don't have to do it again. i think this quote connects to Anthem in the way that the leaders of this community that the fear of everyone becoming better than the other and thinking for themselves caused them to make this big society where they control everything.

  29. The paragraph above uses personification,"Fear walks through the city, fear without name"(Rand 46) The author is saying that fear walks around outside and in which is giving it human actions which fear is not human. Equality's brothers are becoming afraid and experiencing fear maybe because they don't want to keep on doing what they are forced to do but they are afraid of what will happen to them if they don't. The quote,"Your largest fear carries your largest growth", could mean that if you are afraid of something and you don't at least try to overcome it or you will never get over it but if you do you can just keep on succeeding.

  30. Personification is being used in the quote as the author is giving human traits to fear to make a more subtle or a relatable tone in the passage. The government is the one causing fear to his brothers because they never know if they are being watched so and if they ever got caught, they could be punished by death. The quote means you must conquer your fears because if you don't, you will have a boring life doing nothing productive; so you must conquer your fears to be able to do greater things.

  31. The figurative language is being used in this quote is personification. The author wants the reader to understand the feeling of Equality 7-2521 in this dystopian world by using the word Fear. Equal felt depressing when he look upon his brohers, ¨the eyes of our brother are dull, and their muscles are drawn, as if their bodies were shrinking and wished to shrink out of sight.¨ This shows that he scared of people who don´t have feeling, personality, characteristic. The quote above means that if you overcome your largest fear, your can confront everything, which will make you grow up in the way you think.

  32. Personifications is the figurative language being used in the quote. The author gives fear the human quality because it is a side of society they do not want to express. A secret that they can all not share, which shows the relation between the two and society. Equality's brothers gain fear based off of their differences, said on page 47, "who are a bright youth, without fear in the day:but they scream in their sleep"(Rand). This shows there differences because society pretends and settles for acting as if they are okay, unlike Equality who does not settle for this fear and trys to overcome. It means if you let your fear become larger over time, you'll will stay scared or become even more scared and that is why we must try to overcome ours fears.

  33. The fig. language being used is personification, because fear cant ¨Walk the city¨, its a thought, not a real thing. The author uses this (Giving fear personal attributes) because it means that rear is everywhere, no one can avoid it; Fear cant truly be everywhere, but its felt. It doesn't say what is wrong with his brothers, but it is implied that they are afraid, afraid of doing anything wrong because if the do so, they will be punished, it is also stated that ¨All men fear it, and dare to speak of it¨ (Rand 46). The quote of ¨Your largest fear carries your greatest growth¨ relates to anthem because Equality´s fear pushes him to to things such as experiment and ask questions; witch push him forward.

  35. The Quote is using the figurative language known as Personification. Ayn Rand was giving fear human qualities to give the reader a better vision of what the setting is like, what is happening and how everyone feels about what is happening. The fear that all of Equality 7-2521's brothers was placed there because of the leaders of the society. It was placed there because all the citizens of the society are suppose to always be happy, and there are all these rules that are forcing them to hold back all of their feelings and expressions. this is what causes them to be afraid at night, they are too afraid of getting in trouble for simply laughing or showing any real emotion and being punished for it. The quote means that when you come over your fears, you will become even more brave than before, this is shown in Anthem because Equality 7-2521 is making all these transgressions including writing in a journal and showing his thoughts on paper.

The fear in e equalities brothers is them not being able to show there real feeling and emotions that's why they wake up screaming or talk in there sleep screaming help. The quote above fear carries your biggiest growth means the bigger the fear the harder it is to face it but if you do face it you mentally grow stronger. This quote connects with anthem is that they have fear how there society is and what would happen if they ' follow the rules.

The fear is caused by none wanting to be different but they are in little ways. Also they want their opinions to be they same but they sometimes aren't so they fear speaking up. The quote means you grow the most when you realize your fear and face it. In anthem Equality wants to be a scholar but he fears being different when in fact being different is what makes him grow as a person.

The fear is unknown and it is most likely from the councel and people are just basicaly brain washed to think they are right and they are now getting confused. The quote, "Your largest fear carries your greatest growth" means that if you conquer your fear so many doors will open for you and you can grow and learn from this. 50. In the quote personification is used. When it says "fear walks around the city," it doesn't literally mean fear walks around, because fear can't walk. This means that people are always scared to things because the council is always watching them. People can't be who they want, instead they are forced to become what the council wants of them without having any say in their choice. The quote "Your largest fears carry your biggest growth" means that if you can learn to conquer your fears you can find out a talent you have or something you enjoy doing, and when you conquer your fears you are more open to try new things.

  51. This quote from Anthem uses personification. The author gives human fear qualities because it shows that fear can be powerful and can give weakness. It describes it as fear because it can not show any feelings or emotions. Can't talk about how he feels and does not know how he feels. If he did ever say anything it can be a sin in Equality society because "Big Brother" is always watching. This fear is causing the brothers because they can not live for what they want and can not have their own opinion in anything. The quote mean if you can conquer your own fear no matter what the you will have growth in yourself. This quote connects to Anthem because it can show that if you can conquer your fear you can find you happiness to your life even though it would cause problems.

  53. The type of figurative language used in the quote shown is personification. The way Equality 7-2521 speaks of the fear makes it seem like the fear has power over the people, saying "All men feel it and none dare to speak" (Rand 46). The Council and their punishments are causing the fear to Equality 7-2521's "brothers". "Your largest fear carries your greatest growth" seems to me like it's saying that you have to try new things and get over your fears to achieve. "But we, Equality 7-2521, are glad to be living. If this is a vice, then we wish no virtue." Equality 7-2521 knows they can be killed for everything he is doing and feeling, but they feel no shame and are not afraid.

  56. When the author talks about fear walking in the city, that type of figurative language is personification. Ayn Rand gives fear human qualities to make every detail more vivid and to show how fear controls everyone in the city of Anthem. People in Anthem are so afraid of being different because if they are, then they would be severely punished. If there wasn't any fear in Anthem, there wouldn't be anyone to control and that's why the council punishes any differences, "for they dare not speak the thoughts of their minds. For all must agree with all" (Rand 47). The quote, "your largest fears carry your greatest growth" means that when you conquer your biggest fear, you can grow. In Anthem, Equality is afraid of being different but even though he's afraid, that's what is making him grow.

  57. The figurative language that is being used is personification because he is giving fear the human quality. The reason the author is giving fear a human quality is because he is using emotion from everyone. The thing that is causing fear in Equality brothers is that they don´t know how to show there real emotion for example when they woke up screaming they did not know what was happing because they never expiernced that feeling . The quote to me means that every time you face your fear you get stronger by overcoming it.

  59. In "Anthem uses the figurative language personification and gives fear the ability to move walk and clearly fear can't walk. The author gives fear human qualities to show us that in the story the characters have a lot of fear and that everywhere they go they have this fear that can't be explained well but it's always there.Whats causing the brothers to fear is that they get punished badly for being different "we dared not speak. It is a transgression to speak to men of other trades"is an example of how being different is a bad thing(Rand40).The quote means that if you try to do everything to overcome your fear you will start to grow as a person and stop fearing from that fear. This quote connects to anthem because the brothers are not caring about the rules and doing what they believe in.

  60. The type of figurative language being used is personification. The author gives human qualities to fear because in the book fear is everywhere and the citizens are consumed by fear. Equality's brothers fear is caused by how the high council controls their lives and they might do some thing that is bad in the councils eyes and they can get punished for it. The quote means if you concur that fear then you will grow and learn more. In Anthem Equality defeated his fear of going against the councils laws and keeping the hole a secret and researching new things.

  61. The type of figurative language used here is personification because he said that fear was walking throughout the city, the author gives fear human qualities to show how fear was roaming the city, the thing causing the fear is the restraint of holding back emotions, the quote means to not let your fear hold you back and in the world of Anthem you have to let your fear hold you back without your say because there are some people who let their fears control how they live, which makes the courageous person better than the people who let fear take the wheel.

  62. the type of figurative language used is personification. The author gives fear human qualities because fear is everywhere. The author gives it human qualities because of how strong fear can be to people like in Anthem society he fears to love liberty because of bad sins. What causing fear is the government that make people feel fear every moment of their life and makes them do nothing but what they are told. The quote means that "your biggest fear carries your greatest growth" you defeating your biggest fear makes you more confident in yourself and this can relate to Anthem by like how he doesn't follow any of the rules he knows he can't do it but he still does.

  64. In this quote, the author uses personification to give fear human qualities. The author gives fear human qualities because it makes the text seem more vivid, descriptive and more interesting for the reader. The council is causing the fear in Equality’s brothers, but they don’t know that because they’ve never experienced any different so they think it’s normal, “a word steals into our mind, as we look upon our brothers and that word is fear” (Rand 46)The quote means overcoming your biggest fear can lead to your largest growth, this connects to “Amthem” because if the people could overcome their fear of the government, they could overcome the government and not have to live in fear anymore.

  65. the figurative langue is personification he gives fear a human quality by saying that it lurks and sleeps in the air fear is not a living thing. The world council is causing fear in his brothers because they don't ever want to be harmed for breaking the laws of the city. the quote says pretty much if u get over your greatest fear you will have a big growth and it can connect to Anthem because Equality had stood up to the world council by showing them his light him doing that he realized that he has nothing to fear of them and that they don't like his idea of using light instead of using a candle
