Character & Theme: There's a lesson to be learned!

Character & Theme: There's a lesson to be learned!

Complex characters often have more than one motivation/reason for their actions. Their motivations may change, and complex characters often learn lessons that drive the theme of a story. We can also find a theme by looking at how a character faces a conflict or problem. We can learn from a character's choices - good and bad.

Select a character from your novel and answer the following questions:

*Cite text evidence in the form of a quote and be specific in your answers.
  1. What problem is your character facing, and how is he/she handling that problem?
  2. How has your character’s motivation changed from the beginning of the story through the end of part 4 of your reading?
  3. What lesson is your character learning?

  1. Jenna is facing her sadness at her father's death. She handling not too well, she gets very angry sometimes. "'Just angry.'"(McDonald 136) Jenna's motivation turned from finding the person who killed her dad to killing them because of her anger. Jenna is learning that somethings in life are hard to change." No one would even dare change the rules."(McDonald 141) She is also learning when you are down you try to find excuses. " Jenna... any excuse she could find."(McDonald 145) Jenna finds out people who you think don't share your experiences may actually do. She also finds out sometimes doing nice things without telling the person they are meant for may come off as creepy.

  2. Melinda is facing a few different problems in her life right now, her only friend dumped her and she was assaulted and has not told anyone about it yet.Her only friend Heather decided to leave Melinda and join the Martha's instead. Melinda was working with her friend on a project and hinted a little bit about being assaulted but, she never mentioned what really happened, Melinda isn't so much dealing with her problem as she is hiding from it.At the end of part four Melinda is trying to deal with her problem but can not seem to figure out how, Andy Evans (the person who assaulted her) will casually beleaguer her when he sees her "IT sits on the table, Its leg smears my chalk drawing, blurring the roots into a messy fog". She is still trying to convince her self something really happened and she should get help "Was I raped" . She is learning it is always better to speak the truth then to hide it.

  3. David is facing how to get away with killing Mr. Griifin even when people have found evidence of the crime. He tries to get rid of almost all the evidence by getting rid of the body, and change the car colour and driving it to a different part of the state. He goes from trying to kidnap Mr. Griffin to trying to hide the evidence. David's learning to not hide the truth when things go wrong because that'll just make things worse.

  4. Susan in "Killing Mr. Griffin is handling the guilt from her actions, which was having part in Mr. Griffin's kidnapping. Her guilt changed her motivation and she now didn't believe the kidnapping was right, and that she had done a horrible thing. The lesson Susan is learning is to do always do the right thing, even if it will hurt others. She hasn't learned it yet, because she is still covering up Mr. Griffin's death, but I think she eventually will. Another lesson she is learning is to appreciate family. At the beginning she disliked her family, and wished to move as far away from them as she could, but now she is learning to appreciate them for the things they do. "... (she) found herself noticing small things that she had never appreciated before--the kindness behind her father's teasing; the warmth of her mother's smile;..."

  5. Micheals problem in " Swallowing Stones" is that he killed an innocent man on a roof. He doesnt tell anyone about it and only him and his friend joe know about it. Instead of telling the truth, now he just got more people and more of his friends involved. "Micheal felt a twinge of guilt. Somehow he managed to drag forty of his friends into the mire."(McDonald. p.174) His motivation had really gone up at all, he still feels guilt and doesnt plan on telling anyone. I think the lesson hes learning is that he probably shouldve told the truth from the beginning, not hide the, and get even more of his friends involved in that situation.

  6. Melinda is facing multiple problems right now, her only friend left her, because she was "too depressed", she can't talk to her parents about anything, she's been holding everything in, and Andy Evans has been tormenting her "IT stares at my face. I crush my jaws together so hard my teeth crumble to dust"(Anderson 161). She hasn't really been handling her problems, instead she's been hiding them and keeping them inside of her. She's been becoming a little more outgoing as the story progresses, but she still hasn't really talked to anyone about what happened yet. My character is learning how to trust people a little more and how to talk to people without feeling very worried that they are going to hurt her.

  7. In Speak, Melinda is going through hard times. This includes, Heather the only friend that Melinda has, giving her up. For Melinda, this a large problem because Heather was the only friend that she had. Melinda also gets invited to eat piazza with David and his friends at a party that night. Melinda comes up with a bunch of excuses of why she can't go. She does this because she does not feel safe being with a boy alone and has trust issues because of it. Melinda is changing as the story goes on because she is turning into a different person. An example of this is, she is trying in her classes. She also put plants in the front yard to make it look nice. This is a dramatic change because she would never do this at the beginning of the story. One lesson that Melinda learned was to open and talk to someone about being raped. She tells her friend and is about to tell Mr Freeman at the end. "'You've been through a lot haven't you"..."Let me tel you about it'"

  8. Melinda from speak is facing a few different problem in her life. She started school with one friend and know her only friend dump her.Melinda hit that she was assaulted but doesn't say anything else to Heather.Melinda doesn't try to solve her problem she just run from them.Well in the begging of the she wasn't motivated at all she just wanted to hide. Then near the end of part 4 she try to find a way to get help but doesn't know how. Then "she pout and Andy leap off the table ripping my paper ,scattering bits of chalk".Melinda is learning that it not good to keep quite that she should speak up for what she believe.

  9. Susan is feeling extremely guilty for helping to kidnap Mr. Griffin and even worse that he is dead. At first she was intrigued but now she is horrified at what she was a part of. The lesson that she has learned is to never give into peer pressure because it will only cause problems in the future.

  11. Susan is caught up in something she wasn't sure about and is now facing her guilt. She thought that nothing would happen and Mr. Griffin would just be scared, but things go wrong and it just so happened that the kids killed Mr. Griffin and now she's facing her actions. In the beginning Susan was just a little stunned that, "...she agreed to this insanity?" (Hurst 50). Now she is terrified that what was just a scare turned into a death of a man. She didn't want it to go this far, no one did. When they found Mr.Griffin Susan's mind immediately thought Mr.Griffin was just sleeping, tried to wake him, but,"'He's not asleep...He's dead."(Hurst 101). The lesson Susan has learned would probably be, one bad decision leads to a worse mistake.

  13. In "Killing Mr.Griffin", Dave has to face the fact that he has killed someone and has to hide it. At the beginning of the story, he hated Mr. Griffin but he was alive. Now he feels super bad that he left him and made him beg to go free. He regrets everything that they did. Now, he is just trying to get rid of all the evidence like Mr. Griffin's car, wallet, and ring (Duncan 146). My character learned to never kid-nap someone even if it's just a joke. Also, Mrs. Griffin thinks that it was the kids because she came over and asked him about his watch when his watch was actually broken (Duncan 155).

  15. In Killing Mr.Griffin, David actually took the ring from Griffin´s body and now he kept it ¨in the top drawer of my bureau, in a little box...¨(175). When he came home to took it, he couldn´t find it and think that his Gram stole it, ¨then it was you who got into my things.¨(178). He asked Gram about the ring and she said that was his Dad´s. Though he tried to ask her for the ring but she didn´t give it back to David. His motivation changed from tried to keep the ring like that was his stuff, to take it and try to get rid of it because it´s one of the important clues which lead the way to the death of Griffin. He learned that he had done a big mistake by taking the ring because ¨it isn´t a trick, they´ve dug up Griffin and identified ihm. That part about the ring is right. It wasn´t on his finger.¨(173)

  16. In "speak", Melinda's problem that she is facing is figuring a way to tell Rachelle that Andy can hurt her like Andy hurt Melinda, but doesnt know how to tell her. Her motivation in the beginning was to pass highschool with no one knowing why she called the cops. But at the end of the story it changes because in the end she wants to tell Rachelle and she does."...then he raped me.."(Halse,183) But Rachelle has a hard time believing Melinda because Rachelle really likes Andy."..Andy Evans...LIAR!.."(Hasten,184) The lesson Melinda is learning is that its better to speak up then stay quiet because when she is quiet she gets hurt more than if she speaks up.

  17. I chose Melinda as the dynamic character. Melinda is handling the fact that that she got raped pretty well, but shows that she is frustrated by making a presentation on women suffrage in Mr.Neck and gets sent to the office "He gives me a D and escorts me to the authorities."(157) Melinda hasn't changed at all she was scared of telling people about what happening in the beginning of the story and still can't tell anyone. Melinda learned a lesson on telling people about her problems, she could have told her parents or her teachers on what happened but keeps it to herself and suffers because of it

  18. In Speak, Melinda is facing her freshmen year in high school alone. She became friends with a outgoing girl named Heather but Heather got sick of how depressed Melinda was and left her so she could go be with the Martha's."I think it's time for both of us to admit that we...just...are..very...different."(Halse 105) Melinda needed time alone but she became friends again with Ivy because of art class. They both agreed that Rachelle should not be with Andy because he is dangerous. Melinda learned that she wants to help Rachelle get away from Andy.

  19. The main problem that Melinda is facing right now is that Rachel is dating Andy Evans (IT), and she is not handling it well. Melinda´s motives though out the whole book have changed drastically. She was originally extremely afraid of everyone and everything, and now she´s written a note to Rachel about the dangers of Andy,(pg. 152) is starting to talk to Ivy again, and even later gains the confidence to stand up to Heather (pg. 179-180). Melinda is learning a lesson all about the importance of standing up for herself, speaking up about the terrible things that have happened to her, and gaining the ability to have confidence in herself

  20. Melinda is facing the challenges of high school, making friends, fake friends and tough choices based on what has happen in the bast which is effecting the future. With all these roadblocks she handles them in different ways but mostly alone but towards the end this changes, she starts to see the old friends taking the wrong paths and tries to persue them with knowledge of her past from when she was faced with the same situations. Melinda motivation was ever low in the begging of the story she was what people called depressed, because of the summer party and starting high school with no friends. Although she starts to feel enlighten when she meets Heather until Heather tells Melinda, "I think its time for us both to admit that we..just..are..very different." Which showed Melinda that Heather didn't see her in the way Melinda did. A friend.

    1. Towards the end she has the motivation to speak, doing this shows her how it has a different outcome to. The lesson in this story is to speak up and dont keep things to yourself because everyone has feelings and should be able to open up and feel comfortable.

  21. Right now the main characters of the story, Killing Mr.Griffon, are facing the problem of where to hide Mr.Griffon and Mr. Griffon's car. The character's motivation has changed from yeah lets do this to oh god what do we do now. In other words their motivation is diminishing. The character is learning the lesson of don't do stupid things for revenge.

  22. In "killing Mr. Griffin," Dave really hated Mr. Griffin at the very beginning of the book. As we get towards the ending of the book Dave starts hating Mr. Griffin a lot less than he did. He wishes he was never apart of the kidnapping Mr. Griffin plan. When him and Sue were driving they went to the mountains because they didn't want Mr. Griffin being alone any longer because they don't want anything happen to him. "But Mark's not here now,and we are....We can't leave him alone a minute longer!" When they get to they mountain they discover Mr. Griffin but he's dead. David feels really bad towards himself because he didn't want to harm him. Now he ha to keep a secret that he doesn't wanna keep.

  23. Sue is having problems with the guilt of killing Mr. Griffin. "'No,' Susan said. 'Mother I just can't.' She could not shift her gaze from the photograph on the front page." (Pg. 183, Duncan) This illustrates how guilty Susan feels about killing Mr. Griffin. So much as to not even want to go to that funeral or even stop looking at the face of his dead body. She tries to hide this by saying she is depressed about the death of Mr. Griffin but in reality she feels guilty. At the beginning all she wanted was to hangout with David Ruggles, but now all she wants to do is forget about his death or even tell everybody about it so she can be free from guilt. She is now learning that it's better to be alone than to be with the wrong people,

  24. The main problem for David is trying to find a way to not get caught for killing Mr. Griffin even though other people have evidence of the crime. Before Mr. Griffin died, David hated him so much but now he feels guilty and bad for him. Now David has to lie and cover up everything he has done. So David tries to get rid of all the evidence by taking the body and changing the color of the car to carry the body He tries to get rid of almost all the evidence by getting rid of the body, and changing the color of the car to keep the body in and move it to another part of the state. 26. In Swalloing Stones Michael is facing the problem of guilt and maybe going to jail for manslaughter just because he was hanging out with the wrong person on July 4th. Michael is handling this problem decently on the outside but on the inside he is always freaking out and not feeling good. His motivation is spiraling down further and further throughout the entire book as the cops start to become closer and closer to the killer and he is freaking out and doing things he wouldn't neccesarily do like lying to people he wouldn't normally lie to. Michael is learning the lesson that he shouldn't hang out with sketchy people that might influence him to do bad things and he is also learning that his lies are catching up to him.

  27. Micheal is dealing with the guilt by spending his time at the church steps crying(McDonald 72). Micheal goes from just not talking to totally feeling guilty and throwing people under the buss. Micheal is learning not to lie, the more he lies the worse it gets as they go on.

  28. Michel, in swallowing stones, encounters the problem of having the guilt of knowing that he was the reason for a father's death. he shot his rifle in excitement into the air and it came down from the sky and hit a man working on his roof in the back of his head. Michel did not mean to kill anyone and now he is deciding not to tell anyone, not his friends, family, or even the police. His new goal is to avoid arrest and for no one to find out that he is the guilty one. He begins to feel the guilt of hiding and running from his problems and he slowly learns that lying to hide a lie only grows and creates a bigger problem and an even larger punishment.

  29. Micheal is facing the problem where eh killed a man, and he has to find a way to keep it a secret. HE knows it was an accident, but e is afraid that he will get in trouble for not telling the truth. HE is handling the problem by crying at the church steps to show he has "sinned" and wants god to forgive him for it. He is at the church steps and starts to cry, because he can't deal with what he has done. " He noticed that he was only a few yards way from the church" (McDonald 54). This shows that he realized his mistake and went to the church to figure out what he had to do. His motivation changes to less caring to deeply worried, he is now getting more and more concerned about what he is goi

.... about what he is going to do, to solve his dilemma. The lesson Michael is learning is about, lying will get you back in life. If you lie bad things will happen, but if you speak the truth and are honest no matter what, you will be praised and taken more seriously in life.

  30. In swallowing stones Michael is facing the problem of the police coming into hes house and asking for the gun they had (Hurst 116). Micheal handles the problem by telling a lie to the police that Joe had the gun ( Hurst 117). Micheal has changed as i kept reading he lies and now is coming up with plans and explanations to tell the police." so what should i tell the cops". ( Hurst 120).

  31. In Swallowing Stones, Micheal has to face the problem of accidentally killing a man,and putting the blame on his friend Joe. Joe plays along with the lie and gets more and more drunk to cope with the stress, it goes up to the point where Joe goes into a drunken outrage and starts attacking Amy's car. The drunken attack was directed towards Micheal, but Joe was too drunk."She was just merging and then stopped, then Joe got out of the car and headed towards the tercel car" (Mcdonald 182).

  32. The problem David is facing is he has two different opinions on how the situation should be dealt with trying to pull him to that side. Susan thinks they should turn themselves in while Mark is saying keep their mouths shut. He is leaning more to Mark's side, but Susan is with him so often that he is hearing a nag from her. David's motivation has changed by him being innocent and loyal to his family to secretive and trying to hide and rationalize things that aren't rational. The lesson he is slowly learning is that lying piles and piles up and once you lie too much you can't get out if it, you have to keep lying and lying.

David's motivation to be part of the plan was because of the way Mr.Griffin treated his students and because he had to pass Mr.Griffins class. But now that Mr.Griffin is dead he feels bad about it because that wasn't supposed to happen. She is having an inner conflict with herself because she knows Rachel will probably hate her even more than she already does. She handles her problem by deciding to tell Rachel with a note. Melinda's motivation is changing from the beginning of the story to now because before, she didn't even want to talk to Rachel but now she wants to help her.
