Diving into PLOT: Exposition

Diving into PLOT: Exposition

An exposition is the first part of a plot, and it occurs at the beginning of a story. Here the characters are introduced and the setting is described. The main conflict, or trigger, is also introduced. This conflict is meant to "hook" the reader and make him/her want to read more. The exposition should introduce the story and make the reader want to dive in!

In 100-200 words, please describe the exposition of your novel. Include the title of the novel, the setting, important characters, and the beginning of conflict/trigger. Answer the following questions to help with analysis:
  1. What information does the author give you about the characters and the setting? Why would this information be important? (make a prediction)
  2. What conflict or trigger drew you in or "hooked" your attention? Why did this conflict hook your attention? What does it make you think, or what questions do you have so far?
*Due Date: August 24th before class.

  1. I am reading speak. The exposition is when the main character snitched to the cops at a summer party. Ever since then no one has liked her or even talked to her. What really caught my attention is why she called the cops, the book hasn't explained why yet but the author has been giving several hints. This drew my attention because the author has been hinting about sexual assault with out actually saying it. I am 100% against assault and it should never happen to anyone no matter what. I really want to get to the part of what happened, not in full detail or anything but I want to see if the main character defended her self or not. I really question the authors thinking and i'm hoping that I don't have to wait until the end of the book to find out what happens

    1. "She didn't even bother to find out the truth"- stating something happened at the party. "My brother got arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can't believe you did that A**hole." This has made me think about several different things. Why did her brother get arrested? Why would she call the cops?

  2. I'm reading Speak and the main character is Melinda. The conflict is that everyone hates Melinda because she snitched on the cops about a party. The setting is at the school. Her used to be best friend hates her now and everyone else so she's alone at school. She's been alienated by all the other students at her school.

    4. Melinda wants to make friends, but everybody knows her as the girl that snitched people out in the party. She wants tell someone about that night. " Why did you call the cops and its your fault that my brother got arrested you snitch" and why did the brother get arrested? She wants to tell the truth to someone.

  3. In speak the exposition is a girl who called the cops at a party and all of her friends don't want to talk to her anymore. None of her friends ever asked her why she called the cops but as the reader i think she was sexually assaulted because of the things the author says. What hooked my attention is how none of her friends asked her why she called the cops. I think its pretty messed up that her friends would just assume she was trying to snitch and then block her out. I wonder if she ever tells her friends why she really called the cops.

  4. The book I'm reading is Speak. The story line in the exposition is about a young girl who calls the cops at a summer party. Everyone in the first part of the book does not like the main character, Melinda, because she was the one who called the cops. Melinda is very depressed and sad about everything. The author hints that something very important happened at the party and that's what made me get hooked on the story line. I believe that something very sad and horrible happened to Melinda at that party. If I were to make a prediction, I'd say that she probably was assaulted somehow. It makes me want to know more and I really would like to find out what happens to the main girl in this book. I do wonder if she was hurt and now she thinks she has to keep quiet to be okay. I hope she ends up getting help if something very bad happened to her.

    2. On page 4, Melinda says,"I have entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. And I don't have anyone to sit with." The last sentence in this excerpt implies that Melinda went through something very bad which drew me to the conclusion of my previous statement, something incredibly bad happened at the party that Melinda went to.

  5. I'm reading Speak and in the beginning of this book the main character, Melinda called the cops at a end of the summer party. The main character,Melinda start high school with no friends or anybody to talk to because she snitched.when the author says that something happened at the party is when i got hooked. It made me thing that she either was drug or maybe raped. The question i have is if she's ever going to tell anybody what happened to her at the party,is going to it in until she can handle anymore pain and ends up hurting herself.

  6. The book that I'm reading is Speak. The main character in the book is Melinda. The main setting so far is at school. I think its important that the author gives us information about the main character is so we can know who the main character is and what their conflict is. I think the part that hooked me was the back cover, because it says that Melinda called the cops for some mysterious reason, and I want to know what the reason was and why everyone hates her at school. My question is will people at school forgive her for calling the cops? And will they understand her?

  7. I am reading swallowing stones. It starts in July, Michael fired his hunting rife and accidentally killed the other main character's Jenna's father. The author tells us their personalities, it is important because I think they will get to know each other. I go hooked because of Michael inner conflict about if he should tell anyone what he has done especially if he should tell anything to Jenna. It get my attention because I do like murder mysteries even if we know how the murderer is. I wonder is Jenna and Michael will do once Jenna knows the truth? Will Jenna forgive Michael for killing her father.

  8. In the book Speak the main character, Melinda has to start 9th grade alone with no friends. Her Ex-best friends have also all turned against her. Its also very hard for her to make new friends because almost everyone else has turned against her just like her friends. The reason why nobody likes her anymore is because she called the cops at a summer party and got everyone in trouble. That is what hooked my attention. I want to figure out what happened at that summer party that she had to call the cops on it. I’m thinking she was hurt at that party. Eventually the truth will come out.

  9. The Book I'm reading is swallowing stones. It starts on the Forth of July. Michael gets a Winchester hunting riffle and shoots it into the air...by complete mistake the bullet kills a man over a mile away who was the father of the second main character, Jenna. I think Micheal will encounter Jenna and they will get to know each-other and try to support each-other regardless that Micheal by complete accident killed a man. Jenna was angry at first, but might accept Micheal over time knowing it wasn't completely his fault.

  12. I'm reading "killing Mr.Griffin". The book started with a group of friends who had bad scores from Mr.Griffin's English class. From that, Mark, one of the group members, had a plan: Kidnap Mr.Griffin and scare him to fix the homework scores! In my view, kidnaping teacher is a trigger to lead to the rising action.

    1. that starter is the exposition. When they started to discuss about kidnap Mr.Griffin:"plan to kill the bastard""I bet we could scare the shit out of him. Nobody wants to get killed, and Griffin's no exception" (Mark), that is actually the trigger/hook. The internal conflict in this part is when Jeff decided whether come and join the group or do the paper route.

I am reading killing Mr.griffin and it all started when a group of student got bad grades and they were mad and Mark a member from the group came up with a plan of kid napping their teacher and force him to give them good grades or to fix them.I think this information is important because it tells you what the kids are up to and what they can do and this leads to the rising action. What hooked me or what got my attention was the part when the kids planned out what they were going to do to their teacher.this made me think"what kind of kids are those"will they rally do that just for a bad grade that can get fixed if you talk to the teacher or put more effort to what they say.-Lesly Munoz-

  16. In the book I'm reading "Speak" the author introduces the readers right away to Melinda she is a incoming freshman at Merryweather High. Although she has no friends she is completely alone throughout the first day of highschool. From this point my prediction was that maybe she doesn't go to the same highschool as her friends in middle school or maybe just that friends don't last all the time. This was an important exposition because it was letting me know something is wrong with the bound of her friends. When I kept reading I then found out more, I found the trigger/hook of the story which was that Melinda was the the reason her friends were alienating her because of a big incident during summer that was so bad it ended all her friendships, which then caught my attention more. I then found that that she called the cops at a party during the summer and lead everyone into trouble and having no friends left by her side.

Her best friend doesn't talk to her any more and she has no friends they are all alienating her. The reason why Melinda is all alone is because during the summer at a party she called the cops and some people got arrested and the party stopped all a chaos.Thats what caught my attention what hooked me in the book because its so far a mystery why she called the police and it has me in suspense on what well happen next.

  20. I'm reading a book called Speak. It is about a young girl (Melinda) who is just starting 9th grade at a new school. Not only that, but everyone hates her because she called the cops at a party that happened the previous summer. Melinda and Heather (a new friend) are the only important characters so far. The setting is important to the story because it relates to the struggle of starting high school with not only no friends, but that, added to the struggle of developing depression. The conflict/hook that grabbed my attention was when she momentarily mentions the scars on her wrists, arms and lips when the are in the Teacher's lounge. She has had to deal with so much pain that she started to cut herself to "attempt to relieve some of the pain that she's felt". - Wells Dressed Fashion

All the students think that Mr. Griffin gives out way too much homework and is way too strict on them all. All the students want better grades and Mr. Griffin to just leave so they plan to kid nap him. One of the main people planning the attack is a student named Mark who just wants a good teacher. All the students hated Mr. Griffin right from the first day of school when he told them they would start the year off with an F.

  22. The book I'm reading, "Swallowing Stones", it's about a boy who gets his rifle and shoots a bullet in the air, that's where the story begins. It starts out on the Fourth of July. The setting seems like their out in the country side, with big open land, and where most people live as a big community. If the author gives the information, it states a relation-ship between the characters and how they interact with each other in the story. The "trigger" was when it explained when Jenna’s dad got hit with the accidental bullet Michael shot on his seventeenth birthday. This interested me because it explains how the story will start and how it will end up in the resolution. It makes me think that the story will have a very high climatic sequence will some issues to resolve but in the end it will be solved. It also interests when he finds out and he immediately knows it’s him because he knows he was the only one who shot a bullet in the air. My questions, “How does the bullet travel that far out in the air?”, and “If Michael knew there was a bullet loaded why did he shoot it in the air, instead of a target, or a tree, which can’t hurt anyone?”

She has only made one friend right now (Heather) and I could very well say that she will not leave Melinda alone. Melinda just wants to be alone trying to get away from the depression, but this one girl just decides to point her out at a school pep rally. She said,"aren't you the girl who called the cops at Kyle Rodger's party at the end of the summer?" At that moment, Melinda felt entirely embarrassed and hated by everyone. She even had this girl say,"my brother got arrested at that party. He got fired because of the arrest. I can't believe you did that. As*****." After that, she kept getting bad looks shot at her everywhere and she is more of an outcast than ever. She even counted on her ex-bestfriend who now hates her. Her name is Rachel but she wanted to show her
European herotage and named herself Rachelle. She is a real brat. For now, she remains hated by almost everyone at Maryweather high.

The conflict that hooked me to keep reading so far is when they found out it was them who accidently killed Jenna's father and start freaking out so that makes me want to keep reading and find out what happens next. The author gives us information about Jenna about how she is saying "nothing will be okay ever" when her and her mom were talking and I think she's getting mad and maybe the author is trying to say she'll do something bad because of her anger and sadness about the death of her father. Also, the author is showing us that Michael is freaking out no matter what and he's losing sleep and he's almost going insane because of the thoughts he is having because of the accident and maybe he'll do something also that might affect the story.

The rising action of the book is at the very beginning where one of the main characters, Michael, gets super exited about taking his first driving test and fires his rifle up into the air in excitement. Meanwhile, with another main character, Jenna is going about her day as normal and her father is working on their house's roof when all of the sudden a bullet came out of the sky and managed to hit Jenna's father, this lead to Jenna's father's death and she becomes overtaken by grief and despair. 36. I am reading "Killing Mr. Griffin", this book begins on a windy morning before school. Two of the main characters are introduced, Susan and David, on of the external problems that begins the story is when Davids papers blew away and he was only able to catch a few pages and Mr. Griffin does not except late work, Many of the students didn't do there work, but Susan received an F on her paper just for checking her spelling. Just from above you can tell Mr. Griffin is a very harsh teacher. The big trigger or "hook" that drew my attention is when one of the student mentioned Mr. Griffen is the sort of guy you would like to kill" and all of them are kind of interested in this idea and listening. The author gives us information about the characters and setting about how all the students very much dislike their teacher Mr. Griffin, and how they want to try to kill him. This information is important because it tells us how the students’ feel about their teacher and how they work together to try to kill him. The main trigger that drew me into the book was when the students started talking about how they should trap Mr. Griffin into a bad situation. This hooked my attention because it is not normal for a group of students ganging up on their teacher to try to kill him. This made me think how they are going to trap him and then kill him. - Noah Porter

  45. The exposition of the story is when a girl is being pensive. Thinking so much in a way that she would be dreaming. Dreaming of a being in a cabin by a lake. This girl's name is Susan. She is a high school student that takes a class with a hardcore teacher. This teachers name is Mr.Griffon. Mr.Griffon teaches English. Jeffry had had a basketball game and could not do his assignment. Mr.Griffon does not care and thinks that basketball is something so important that it could be an excuse for his incomplete assignment. Jeffry receives an F. Everyone hates Mr.Griffon so they create a plan to scare the teacher. The author gives us some really good information about the characters by giving us insight on the characters lives somewhat outside the school. The setting is not given to us directly in the beginning of the story. This information is important for keeping the reader "hooked". The trigger the caught my attention was the defiance of the students towards the teacher. It almost reminds me of the relationship that I have with my mom.

  46. I am reading "Speak". Speak is about a 9th grader names Melinda. The story starts on the first day of school at Merryweather high school. She starts off her year horrible because no one likes her after she called the cops at a summer party. All of her middle school friends left her, but worst of all her ex best friend Rachel hates Melinda's guts.Later in the book Melinda is at a pep rally for the school and one of the siblings of the people at the party calls Melinda an a**hole and starts yanking her hair because her brother got arrested at the party. The hook in the story is why she called the cops

  47. my book is "speak". the main character is Melinda. she is 9th grader the story begins on her first day of high school at Merryweather. she doesn't have a great first day no one likes after she "called the cops at a party over the summer". All of her friends hate her even her best friend Rachel. soon there is a "prep rally and every one hates calling her names and pulling her hair". the hook of the story is to find out why every one hates and that was when she called the cops at the party

  48. The book i am reading is "speak" its about a girl that doesn't really have a lot of friends because she called the cops on her friends party because she was trying to study and it was making it harder for her to think so she made that decission to call them. Then all of the friends that were there stopped talking and hanging out with her at school so now she is always lonely at school. So ever since she called the cops people are not talking to her and when she did that her older brother got arrested, By the way the girl is a 9 th grader and her name is Melinda and the hook of the story is why she called the cops

  49. I am reading the book speak and the author tells me that Melinda is a socially awkward girl and the reason for that behavior is she lost all friends when everyone found out that she called the cops when there was a party going on in the summer. I think this information the author told us is important because she might end up being popular in the end. On her first day of high school she made one friend and a couple weeks later the school had a pep rally and these girls started to pull her hair and punch her because one of the girl's brother got arrested because she called the cops. The hook of the story is when she called the cops. This hook caught my attention because I am wondering why she called the cops on the party and why did she lose all of her friends over that call.

  50. the character (Melinda) says that everyone besides Heather is unkind, and she said the school is full of cheerleaders and football players. A reason this would be important is because maybe she runs into them all at once. The part that got me hooked is when she meets her art teacher, because he was getting into too much detail about art.

  51. The book that I am reading is Speak. The main character in the book is Melinda. The main setting so far in this book is at school. Melinda has no friends accept Heather. Nobody really likes her because in the summer their was a party and something bad happened to Melinda she had to call the police. What hooked me in the book was at the assembly when the girl was picking on Melinda for calling the cops. I wanna keep reading because I wanna find out what really happened at the party and why she did it.

  52. Melinda is the main character in the story she is lonely and that is what hooked me in because i feel her pain even though I never experience it but i have seen people experience it.Her only friend is the new kid her name is heather and that is because she dose not know that she called the police on a party and that is why she has no friends I think this is important because at the end she could have a lot of friends because of heather helping her out. Also if she dose find out what happens i don't think she will care that much.

  53. The book is about Susan(the main character) and she is a kind of a loner with only one friend, Heather, and she has a huge crush on David. Mark had a plan to kidnap Mr. Griffin as a joke and to give him his own medicine. Mark uses David against her to get her to join their plan to kidnap Mr. Griffin. I think Susan will follow through with the plan because she is very desperate for friends and popularity.

  54. A girl named Sue is in a storm walking to school and to see a teacher named Mr.griffin. A boys papers all blow away and Mr.griffin dose not accept paper late for any reason. Lots of the students don't like him at all because the highest grade is currently a B... they have not even one A. This one kid named Jeff is upset and gets a group together to scare him and so them how they feel. After getting David on board he calls to and asks out Sue out on a "date"...

  55. The exposition in killing Mr.Griffin in when they start introducing Sue, David, Mark, Jeff, and Betsy they story starts as they are all in the their senior lit class and they are waiting for their teacher to get there. The hook of the story is when Mark, Jeff, and Betsy are in the Snack-'n-soda and Mark says "why don't we plan to kill the bastard" and then the riding action is when the go to the car and actually try coming up with a plan to "kidnap" Mr.Griffin

  56. Susan is the first character and she has a big crush on David. The other characters are Betsy, mark, and Jeff they made the plan to kill Mr.Griffin.this was the trigger/hook it caught my attention. It makes me wonder of what will happen, if they will succeed or fail or how far will they take it.I wonder how everyone will react, if they will freak or be calm.Something important the author says is that Susan has a crush on David so Susan would pretty much do anything to be with him.But she doesn't know what is going to happen, she is just the decoy.

  57. Susan and David are the two characters introduced first in the story and the setting is in high school and most of the students hate Mr. Griffin because he always mean to them so Mark came up with a plan to kidnap him and scare him to give them good grades.Mark told Jeff and Betsy the plan and they accepted it David also joins and so does Susan for the look out. What hook me in when they all actually decided to kill a teacher just because he to hard on them it made me think that what's wrong with these kids.

  58. In swallowing stones the exposition is before Micheal MaKenzie took his drivers test. The trigger of the story is when he hears on the radio that a man was randomly shot and killed by a bullet in the air, on the same day and time Micheal shot a gun in the air.

  59. The author gives me information about the characters and the settings by going one by one back and forth with the characters expressing their feelings with each other. This information is important because you can see whta their feeling at this point with themselves. The hook of the story for me is when he found out that with just one bullet he has killed an inocent man without any intendtion. It grabed my attention by everything he has felt.

  60. The exposition in Swallowing Stones is that when michale was taking his drivers test he heard the news that someone has been shot and that day he was the one who shot the gun in the air. what got my attention is that when he got the news and he was in the middle of his drivers test he got so nervous so quick and he kept trying to change thinking that it wasn't him.It makes me think why would he shoot a gun up in the air in the first place.

  61. I am reading swallowing stones, the exposition of this story is when they introduce Michael Mackenzie the main character.Michael goes and takes a drivers test he failed it and he got a gun for his birth day and "he shot up in the sky" and he killed Charlie Ward only hours after the incident happen. That's the trigger.Text evidence is that they tried to act like nothing happen, and they shot it up in the sky.

  62. The book i'm reading is "swallowing stones" and some information that the author gives me is that one of the main characters name is Michael MacKenzie and that he killed this girl's father by accident.Other important characters are Jenna and her mom. This information would be important so that we can know the characters better. What really hooked my attention was when Michael was thinking that he could have accidentally killed a man. This hooked my attention because it was so shocking that some could kill someone else.

  63. I'm reading "Speak", the story begins with the main character Melinda getting on the bus to go to her first day of high school. So far the story has been about her getting bullied and ignored because she called the cops on a party last summer, and nobody knows why so they’re mad at her for snitching on them.. The trigger/hook is when she starts talking about what happened last summer, because it makes you want to know more about it, but she won't talk about it. "Here I am in the middle of a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do. I can't tell them what really happened”

  64. I'm reading "Killing Mr.Griffin" and the exposition is when they introduce Jeff, mark,David, sue waiting Mr.Griffin to walk in class.None of the students like him and hate him because they got bad scores and the teacher won't let them retake. Then they plan to kill him but then Sue called him and said 'If he was planning on killing the teacher'.The teacher is always treating them bad and they are trying to come up with a plan,so Mr.Griffin would bring up there grades. There plan is too kidnap and scare him so he could give them a better grade.

  65. the book i'm reading is called "Killing Mr. Griffin" it's about these kids who really don't like Mr. Griffin,so one day they just got tired of him and decide to kidnap him in the woods but something goes wrong, when they go back to get Mr. Griffin from the woods they realize that he is dead. The sitting takes place mostly in school for the first chapter but they next 3 touch on the other kids lives and what's going on in their world, But where they got the idea to kidnap him was in school. Other information that the author gives us is what is going on in the mind of the characters for instance we know that mark has twisted thoughts (as we learned fro jeff's flash back.

    1. What got me "hooked" to the story was at the end of chapter one where jeff states "That Griffin's the sot of guy you'd like to kill" because for me that's where the book starts. It grabbed my attention because it show's where the story is going and it also gives us an insight to what a student is thinking and my question would be has anyone else has had those thought's about Mr. Griffin? If you think about it they might of have, because there are examples of students not liking Mr.Griffin (Page 11 where it states that the mid-semester exam had been a disaster for everyone.) So i was thinking if a teacher had failed you so many times wouldn't you have thought about killing him? (well not literally but like saying it to yourself.)

  66. My book is "Killing Mr. Griffin" by Lois Duncan. The main characters are Susan, Jeff, Betsy, Mark, David, and Mr. Griffin himself. They plan to kidnap Mr. Griffin because he is horrible to them and they think he deserves to be on the other side and be the one suffering. All the characters have different jobs, and all of it was planned perfectly until something goes wrong. It makes me want to know what happens and if they actually go through with it.

  67. The book I am currently reading is "Killing Mr. Griffin" by Lois Duncan. So far, the characters that have been introduced to us are Susan, David, Jeff, Mark, Betsy, and the title's namesake, Mr. Griffin. After a heated argument between Jeff and Mr. Griffin, Jeff mutters something like"he's the kinda guy you'd want to kill", and then the story starts taking off from there. When everyone goes to lunch, Mark somehow convinces Jeff and Betsy into a plan to kidnap Mr. Griffin and give him a good scare. A little while later, he also convinces David to help them with their plan. All of the students that have Mr. Griffin don't like him much because his class is hard, and he doesn't take late work to make-up work, and most of them are failing his class and depend on a good english grade to graduate. I want to know if Mark really means to just scare him or to actually kill him without the others knowing.

  69. The main character of the book "Speak" is named Melinda and she is a freshman in high school. So maybe she gets bullied or doesn't have many friends. But what got me "hooked" was the fact that no one knows why she called the cops and won't talk about it. But in the book at a assembly she can feel everyone staring at her and can feel the hate. " here I am in a hostile crowd that hates me for what I had to do". But she won't say why she had to.

  70. The book im reading is called Swallowing Stones and the main characters are Micheal, includes his bestfriend joe, and jenna. The setting isnt only one place, its alot of places in the story where they go. What they do in those places can maybe lead to the theme. When it was his birthday and he shot the gun randomly in the air. Because its something you dont expect to happen and it wont always happen also. Like if it hit someone? Or did someone see them? The main character doing something can affect and lead to the conflict then just set the whole story .
